 Computer Repair Bracknell Customer Testimonial

“Malcolm from Computer Help 4U has been helping me with my computer for over a year now. In that time he has taught me confidence,  despite the fact I am a senior citizen with little knowledge of new technology. He is exceptionally knowledgeable with the workings of all computers and can be trusted to achieve high standards in both repairs and tuition. I have found him to be honest at all times and most definitely reliable, always making sure any job is professionally carried out.”

Mrs. E.J. Willoughby

Bracknell Computer Tips

How To Avoid Computer Disasters

At Computer Help 4U we spend quite a lot of our time helping people recover from computer disasters, many of which could have been prevented by taking a few simple precautions.

Here we give some tips on how to avoid some of the most common problems we encounter:

  • Plug everything that is connected to the computer in to a surge protector and surge protect the telephone line too.  Every year we get calls to computers and computer equipment that have been damaged by power surges, either through the mains or through the telephone line. Some people are aware that it is prudent to guard against surges through the mains but the vast majority of home computer users have no protection from surges through the telephone line. Where the phone line is plugged directly in to the computer such a surge will often take out the motherboard of the computer.

We have had several calls to homes where a broadband modem or Router is used and a surge through the phone line has taken out the modem/broadband Router and then gone on to damage the computer motherboard. We recommend using a high quality surge protector such as the Belkin SurgeMaster or Belkin Professional range protects against surges through the telephone line and the mains.

  • Keep your computer secure. One of the most common computer problems we see are malware infections (infections by Spyware, viruses, Trojan Horses, etc). These can have consequences ranging from compromising your credit card or bank account details (one customer came to us after having his current account emptied as a result of a security breach on a computer he was using) to having to reload Windows, drivers and all your programs back on to your computer. See our Keeping Your Computer Secure article for tips on this topic.
  • Take regular backups. Another common occurrence is for us to be called out to home computer users who have lost their photographs and documents because of a catastrophic computer failure. Always take regular backups, whether to CD, memory stick or external hard drive. If you are one of the many people who means to do this but often forgets, buy an external hard drive (we have found the most reliable to be the Maxtor Basics Personal Storage 3200 range) and some reliable software that allows you to schedule regular automatic backups (e.g. Acronis True Image). If you have a Windows Vista Home Premium computer then you already have reliable backup software built-in to Windows.
  • When errors or problems occur ask for help. Many people don’t ask for assistance until their computer problems are so bad that their computer won’t start but errors when you start your computer can be an early indication of infection or hardware problems. At Computer Help 4U we offer a free Computer Health Check to computer users in Ascot, Bracknell, Crowthorne, Sandhurst and Wokingham which can help put your mind at rest.

Following the tips above can help you avoid many of the computer disasters we encounter every day.
