Ascot Computer Tips

Buying Your New Windows Vista Computer

Buying a new computer can be a confusing time for consumers.  Here we give some tips on what to look for when considering buying a new Windows Vista computer.

Processor - The first thing you should consider when buying your new Windows Vista computer is the processor. It takes a fairly powerful processor to run Windows Vista well and there will be several updates to Vista over the coming years to keep it up to date with new technology. This means that if you want your computer to last you should choose a computer with the fastest processor your budget will allow. Before you buy your Windows Vista computer find out the type of processor (e.g. Intel Core 2 Duo processor) and speed (processor speeds are measured in GHz). If you want your computer to last as long as possible we would recommend at least an Intel Core 2 Duo processor E6600 2.4GHz processor.

Memory (RAM) – It takes at least 1024 megabytes (MB) of Random Access Memory (RAM) to run Windows Vista well, so make sure the computer you are thinking of buying actually comes with this amount. Also ask about the maximum amount of memory the computer will take – over time you may well need to add more memory and if your computer is to last it should be capable of taking at least 4096MB of RAM.

Hard Disk Drive – The hard disk is where Windows Vista and all your documents, music, pictures, etc are stored. Generally speaking, the more music, pictures and videos you want to store the larger the hard drive of your new computer will need to be. Hard drive size is measured in gigabytes (GB) and you will see hard drives in 120GB, 250GB, 500GB, etc sizes. As a rough guide, Windows Vista generally uses 10GB-15GB of hard drive space and a DVD movies takes around 5GB.  1GB will hold between 250 and 1,000 digital camera photographs and between 200 and 400 music tracks.

Windows Vista – There are three versions of Windows Vista for home users – Windows Vista Basic, Windows Vista Home Premium and Windows Vista Ultimate. Vista Basic is very basic, it has only the core features and is designed to run on basic computers. Vista Home Premium is probably the version you will see most often and has everything you would expect for a home computer user, i.e. web browser, email program, music player, backup program, photo gallery, etc, all built in. Vista Ultimate has all the features of Vista Home Premium and Vista Business combined, so it has better security and backup capabilities.

Warranty – You will need to decide what kind of warranty to buy with your computer. The best type of warranty offers next day replacement of faulty parts in your home by a service engineer.  As many as 1 in 4 computers can develop a problem within the first three years so it’s worth considering whether to extend the manufacturers one year warranty to three years.
